Background: There is little published about non-traditional and online college students’ health and well-being. College health services must evolve to address the needs of this growing population. The purpose of this study was to explore risk factors, perceived well-being, health behaviors, and health education preferences of US college students enrolled in a fully online academic programs compared to a national sample of college students enrolled in campusbased programs. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a volunteer sample of 961 college students enrolled in two large, U. S. accredited online universities. Participants completed an online survey that included questions and sub scales from the National College Health Assessment (NCHA, IIb). Responses on survey items from student learning online were compared to an equal sample of college students enrolled in non-online programs, randomly drawn from the NCHA IIb national data set (n = 961). Frequencies on survey items were calculated and mean scores of subset measures for online students were compared against those from the NCHA data set using twotailed z-test scores and independent sample t-tests with alpha at 0. 05. Results: Online students reported significantly (P ≤ 0. 05) higher percentages of chronic illnesses, psychiatric conditions, mobility disabilities, deafness/hearing loss, speech/language disorders, cigarette use, obesity, sedentary activity, and depression than the NCHA national sample. Implication for Practice: Health professionals and leaders who work in higher education must consider the shifting landscape and demographics in higher education in order to develop more tailored, innovative digital health promotion approaches that effectively reach the growing population of online, commuter, and older learners.

Background: Health promotion within higher education institutions is gaining increasing global attention, particularly in response to the growing health challenges faced by adolescents and young adults. This demographic often experiences a convergence of health-related issues, including poor dietary practices, substance use, mental health disorders, and obesity. These issues frequently interact in complex ways, influencing long-term health trajectories. This scoping review aimed to examine the breadth of strategies and research concerning health-promoting initiatives across universities worldwide, while identifying existing gaps in the literature. Methods: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024 using the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases. After screening and eligibility assessment, 272 articles were included in the final review. Results: Thematically, 19% of studies focused on health-related policies and frameworks, 19% on mental health and wellness, 16% on technology-assisted interventions, 14% on physical activity, 7% on nutrition, 6% on behavioral habits, and others addressed curriculum restructuring. Conclusion: Findings reveal that most interventions remain in preliminary stages of implementation, with limited follow-up studies evaluating their effectiveness or cost-efficiency. There is a pressing need for robust, longitudinal research to assess outcomes, particularly in low-and middle-income countries. Furthermore, regional disparities—especially the limited representation from Sub-Saharan Africa—underscore the necessity for inclusive, globally coordinated research networks to foster equitable health promotion across diverse educational settings.

Today understanding and applying the empowerment strategy is a major goal of promoting community health. In health promotion, we consider both individual and community empowerment. Individual empowerment is a process of controlling risk-taking behaviors and factors promoting unhealthy life style by taking sound and responsible decisions. At the same time, community empowerment and capacity building is one way to take responsibility of the society for its population health and well beings. For community empowerment, we need not only to support activities by certain people, institutions and organizations within the community, but also we need to decrease or eliminate discriminations and inequities in order to give this chance to people to take responsibilities for their own and the society's health and well beings. The opportunities to take such responsibility should be readily offer at homes, schools, workplaces and the other settings within the community. The process of empowerment Therefore, is a community action, which enhance people, organizations and institutions participation; improve healthy public policies and quality of life of people and ultimately end up with equity and development of the community. There is a difference between individual and community empowerment. Individual empowerment backs to the man action to make healthy and responsible decisions in order to control the risk-taking behaviors, while, community empowerment means the action of all institutions and organization within the community to increase the chance of controlling the health determinants as well as the factors affecting the health and well beings of society. The main goal of community empowerment is to increase the quality of life and promoting healthy life style. There is a question of whether similar to western world that the health promotion has changed dramatically the life style of society, could be effective in less developed countries? WHO has recently developed useful data on such effectiveness via individual and community empowerment. The data shows many communities were able to decrease the rate or control many communicable and non-communicable diseases such as, TB, Malaria, AIDS, CVDs, Diabetes, Intentional and Non-intentional injuries, Accidents, etc. WHO also provided data on the effectiveness of empowering people and community to decrease inequities and increase the welfare of societies. The future will show such effectiveness in less developed and under developing countries.
